Days of Thanksgivings have been celebrated by many cultures throughout history. For most, these were religious days and spent in prayer.
In 1621, after a hard year in the New World, the Pilgrims has a very successful fall harvest, thanks in part to the assistance of the Native American inhabitants. The Pilgrims had beaten the odds and their Governor, William Bradford, declared an official day of Thanksgiving. That celebration included a feast which was shared by the Pilgrims and the Native Americans.
The custom of holding an annual celebration after the harvest continued for years and was declared a national holiday in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln.
